Wise Owl Gases Backward

This exercise starts with the feet at shoulder width, lift your chest a little, do not stick it out. Turn your head to the left and look to the rear as you exhale then inhale as you return your head to the front. Remember to keep you shoulders relaxed. Your body should remain facing front. Repeat this motion turning the head to the right and looking to the rear. Do twelve repeats of this left and right turn.

Bring your hands up to waist level and place the hands palms in fingers point towards the spine. The hand will rest just above the point just above the buttocks. Again turn the head and look to the rear as noted above. Keep the lower body facing forward and keep things relaxed. Do Twelve repeats of this left and right turn.

Finally bring the hand up to the chest with your palms facing up one hand over the other. Slightly push your elbows and shoulders out so that the you create slightly rounded top of a ā€œCā€ in the upper back. Again repeat the head turns with the body remaining straight forward.

During all there parts you should imagine moving your Qi from your lower Dan Tien down to your Bubbling wells in the soles of your feet and the Huiyin cavities as you exhale and turn your head to the side. Lead the Qi back up to your Dan Tien as you inhale and turn the head back to the front.

This exercise is said to benefit the Yin organs (heart, liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys) and to balance your emotional wellbeing especially: happiness, anger, sorrow, joy, love, hate and desire.

Note: some versions present this exercise very differently. They have you bring the right arm up to head level and reach around the back of the neck and cup the left ear, while bring the left arm up to the waist and reaching around the back with the palm facing out. You then run your head and also your waist as you look to the rear and down at your heel. This variation is similar to one of the body looseners I present in my section on Chi Running Body looseners.

I have also seen versions that turn the leave the hips facing fronnt, but turn the waist and upper body to the left and right as well as turning the head. This results with the hips facing North, the Chest facing East or West and the head facing South looking over the shoulder.
